This was a very important race for us because it was my husband's first race. When I married Colin, I quickly figured out that he didn't enjoy running and I wasn't going to magically make him a runner without causing marital strife.
I was very surprised when I asked if he wanted to do the race and he said yes. He did some running on his own before hand, but some orthopedic problems were causing him pain. (In my not so professional opinion, a broken leg when he was a kid has caused some problems with over-tightening in the muscles in his legs.)
Mixed feelings about the race itself--the race was a little unorganized. People didn't know where different courses went and it started late, which was only a problem because it was cold. But after we got going, I think Colin enjoyed it.
The course was longer than a 5k. Someone said 3.8 miles, I got 3.56 miles when I entered it into Runkeeper. I stopped to use a bathroom along the way (I am almost 4 months pregnant) so I don't know what my real time was. Plus, the timing chips got pretty messed up (and they thought me and my sister were men.) I wasn't feeling real great and ran it in about 51 minutes which is an average pace of 14:30 minute miles. When I got back from Idaho, I went running and was back at a 11:30 minute pace, so I don't know what the problem was that morning.
Colin caught the racing spirit and ended up running the last little bit in quite a bit faster than me and beating me by a minute. I hope he wants to do one of these again because it was delightful having him with me the entire time.Way to go Colin!

Thanksgiving Race
Growing up, on Thanksgiving my family would do the local Turkey Trot 5k. It was a generous race in New Mexico and being a family of runners, we would sometimes come home with multiple turkeys or pies (prizes for top finishers in each age group). I love that tradition--there's something really right about balancing out the feasting of the day with some good physical activity in the morning.
This year, I'm trying to get as many people as I can to do the race in Idaho Falls, where we'll be for Thanksgiving. So if you'll be in the Southeastern Idaho, come join us--bring your family too! You can find race info HERE or HERE. The last day to register at a reduced price is in a couple of days, on October 11th.

Nebo Half Marathon
I am an instigator. I talked my sister, Bethany, into running a half marathon with me this September. It will be my 4th and her first. We're running the Mt. Nebo Half Marathon.
I'm really excited about this race because it's a fantastically beautiful canyon and the fall colors are going to be starting. I'm not trying to P.R. (1:42:36.8 @ Canyonlands Half Marathon), this is more just for fun and because I like having a specific race to train for--otherwise I slack off quite a bit.
The race is 10 weeks away, so I'll be using the same training program as I did for Provo City Half Marathon that I did in May. I found it at Fit Chick in the City's website. I'm stealing it and putting it here.
This is a very general training plan and doesn't include pace. This is how this training program translates for me.
Monday - Run #1 moderately easy pace (9-10 min/mile pace)
Tuesday - Cross training/Rest
Wednesday - Run #2 Speed or Hill (8-9 min/mile pace for speed, 9-10 min/mile pace for hill)
Thursday - Run #3 easy pace (10 min/mile pace)
Friday - Cross training/Rest (Hike day!)
Saturday - Run #4 long run (9-10 min/mile pace, or slower depending on how I feel)
Sunday - Rest
